ALICE ELIZABETH HUMPHREY WHITE
Alice Elizabeth Humphrey White, known as “Jib” and
“Bibbi”, died at home Friday, January 19, 2018,
surrounded by her children. She was 89.
Born in Summersville on February 25, 1928, she was
the daughter of the late James Clinton and Margaret Mary
Dotson Humphrey. She was preceded in death by her
infant son, Daniel Mark, and her siblings, Mary Jo Sebert
and Jim Humphrey. She has two living sisters, Ann
Bennett of Summersville and Jane Rogers of Huntington.
Jib graduated from Nicholas County High School in
1946, and attended beautician school in Huntington,
West Virginia. She returned to Summersville and opened
her own beauty shop, and in 1949 married H.C. White.
She quickly became a full-time homemaker as she
welcomed her children: Steven (Nancy) White of McLean,
VA; Sara (Ron) Chapman of Huntington; Barbara
(Rodney) LeRose of Summersville; Robert (Cherie) White
of Charleston; Josie Vassiliou of Charleston; William
(Nancy) of Martinsburg; Nancy Woodruff of Charleston;
and Susan (Mark) Newell of Hendersonville, TN. She is
also survived by 23 grandchildren and 29 great
grandchildren—each of whom she adored.
In the mid-1970’s, Jib began working in retail, and
then worked for many years at the Nicholas County Clerk’
s office, retiring in 1990. She was an active member of St.
John the Evangelist Catholic Church all her life,
participating in the altar society, teaching CCD, working
with the ladies’ organization, singing in the choir, and
serving as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. She
had a special place in her heart for the men and women
who serve the church as priests, brothers, and nuns, and
a firm devotion to the sanctity of human life.
In her last 15 months of life, Jib was fortunate to have
wonderful caregivers, including Sarah Holcomb, Suzanne
Roberts, and her cousin, Cindy Dotson. Our family is
deeply appreciative of their loving care.
Calling hours will be at White Funeral Home on
Thursday, January 25, from 6-8 p.m. with the Rosary

Friday, January 26 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist
