                    JAMES E. THOMAS

    James E. Thomas, 92, of Leivasy, WV passed away
on Sunday, July 8, 2018 in the Summersville Regional
Medical Center.  Born April 28, 1926 at Jodie, WV he was
a son of the late Samuel and Ella Elkins Thomas.  He
was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 65
years, Mabel Hardway Thomas in 2012; two sons, Mark
Thomas and Sam Thomas; all of his brothers and sisters,
making him the last family member of his immediate

    He was Baptist by Faith and had attended the 1st.
Prospect Baptist Church in Leivasy; a retired mine
foreman for Pittston Coal Company; US Navy Veteran
serving during WWII; and was an avid camper, hunter,
fisherman enjoying all those sports with his six sons and
grandchildren.  James was very patriotic, joining the
Navy at age 16.  He was a boxer and he fought many
rounds in life defeating death.  Torpedoed by a German
U-boat in WWII; shot by a Cowen town cop during his
father-in-law and brother-in-law’s double funeral; carried
out of the coal mine twice covered up for dead; hit a
bridge abutment head on with his vehicle; fell on a
running chainsaw after having a brain aneurysm; rolled
his 4-wheeler, breaking several ribs, shoulder blade and
puncturing one lung; but he lost the final round to death
after rolling his side by side at age 92.  Mable said it
would be “Christmas in July” because she wanted him in

    Survivors include four sons, Dr. David Thomas
(Barbara) of Fenwick Mt, Randy Thomas (Kathy Jo) of
Beckley, Jamie Thomas (Kathy) of Summersville, WV,
and Dr. Tim Thomas (Terri) of Johnson City, TN;
daughter-in-law, Kay Thomas of Hominy Falls; 14
wonderful grandchildren, Shannon, Matthew, Adam,
Seth, Lucas, Marcus, Jason, Jeremiah, Kristina, James
Eric, Kristen, Cassie, Danny, and Amy; 21 great-

    Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday,
July 12, 2018 in the White Funeral Home at
Summersville with Rev. Tim McClung officiating.  
Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Nettie.

Friends may call at the funeral home on the day of the
service one hour prior to the services.
