|Madeline Phyllis Payne Crowder
Madeline Phyllis Payne Crowder, retired teacher and
former resident of Tioga, WV passed away at her home in
Summersville, WV on April 21, 2018 at the age of 78.
Madeline was born on February 29, 1940 in Brooklyn,
She was a 1957 graduate from Hempstead High
School. She studied Nursing at Adelphi University in NY
then later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Education from
Glenville State College. Her passion was for History,
Mythology, English, and Shakespeare. Mrs. Crowder
taught at Richwood High School for over 20 years till her
retirement in 2005. She then substituted for a brief time
for Nicholas County Schools and the Nicholas County
Headstart/Preschool program. She was loved by her
students and was known for her intelligence and passion
for learning. Madeline empowered and inspired many.
This is evident by the love and admiration of her students
and the success of her children. Madeline’s hobbies
included participation in political rallies, gardening,
reading, crocheting, knitting, genealogy, and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garner
W. Crowder, her mother, Louise R. Seismann, and father,
Edward Payne. She is survived by her 7 children and
their spouses: Garner P. Crowder of Summersville, WV;
Laura Crowder and Mike Rowe of St. Albans, WV;
Cynthia and David Lough of Summersville, WV; Robert
Crowder of Tioga; Amanda and Armand LaRochelle of
Brandon, MS; Amelia and Bob Mullins of Hillsboro, WV;
Jessica Crowder and Harold Butler of Craigsville, WV and
15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at White Funeral Home located in
Summersville, WV on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 with
Pastor David Sommerville officiating. Family visitation
begins at 11 am, family and friends at 12 pm, services at
1 pm and interment following at Mount Olive Cemetery
located in Tioga, WV.
