JOHN ALLEN SHAFFER, JR.
John Allen Shaffer, Jr., 81, of Hazard, KY, passed
away Friday, May 20, 2016 at Hazard Appalachian Regional
Hospital after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 18, 1935 in
Webster Springs, WV, the only son of the late John Allen
and Audrey Frances (Casto) Shaffer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his wife of 45 years Yvonne (Helmick) Shaffer, infant sister
Carolee Marie Shaffer, and daughters Teresa Jane Shaffer
and Anita Lynne “Edie” (Shaffer) Moniz.
He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Shaffer Leabo,
Hazard; grandchildren Aja (Moniz) Baumann and husband
William, Cambridge, MA, John Charles Leabo, Lexington,
KY, Jameson Moniz, Peterborough NH, and Antoinette
Contento, Hazard; sisters Frances (Shaffer) Oldham,
Wildwood, FL and Sharon Shaffer, Tavares, FL; son-in-law
James Moniz, Peterborough; and many loved nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
He was honorably discharged from the United States
Air Force in 1966, after serving both overseas in Taiwan and
the Philippines, and in the States during the Korean and
Vietnam Wars. While enlisted, he earned his GED and took
courses in electronics repair, which served him well later in
life. He was a lifetime member of the Oliver Hazard Perry
VFW Post 7387 in Hazard.
Along with his wife, he was the owner and operator of
Shaffer Television Inc., Curtis Mathes Home Entertainment
Center. The original business was opened in 1974 in
Cumberland, KY and expanded to 7 locations throughout
Southeast Kentucky before his retiring in Hazard on Dec.
After retirement, he continued dabbling in his wood
shop, tending his garden, and reading his westerns. A lover
of all animals, he also enjoyed feeding the birds and
squirrels that visited his backyard, and would watch them
from his favorite chair on the porch. He leaves his two little
dogs and two pet birds to mourn him.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 26 from 6 to 8 pm at
White Funeral Home, Summersville, WV. A funeral service
will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 27 at the
funeral home with the Rev. Dana Gatewood officiating.
Burial will follow in Walker Memorial Park,
Military honors will be conducted at the graveside.
